Day 2 | SUNDAY, MARCH 7 | Guatemala City – Chichicastenango – Lake Atitlán

Breakfast. We will depart for the Guatemalan Highlands, heading to the town of Chichicastenango, home to one of the most iconic indigenous markets in Latin America.

Upon arrival, we will immerse ourselves in a fascinating world of colors, aromas, and traditions. The market, which comes to life every Thursday and Sunday, unfolds as a vibrant mosaic where the scent of incense, the lively bargaining, and the fusion of Mayan and Catholic beliefs create a unique atmosphere.

We will visit the Church of Santo Tomás, a symbol of religious syncretism, where ancestral rituals coexist with Christian devotion. Later, we will explore the local cemetery, famous for its brightly painted tombstones and mausoleums, reflecting a deep spiritual connection between the living and their ancestors.

Today, we will also participate in a corn workshop led by women from the local community, highlighting their role as guardians of Mayan traditions. Through their knowledge of corn, they share a cultural legacy passed down through generations.

After the workshop, we will continue to Lake Atitlán, which Aldous Huxley described as the most beautiful lake in the world.

We will walk through its streets to admire the open-air murals created by talented local artists.

We will visit Flor de Ixcaco, a women’s weaving cooperative where we will learn about the weaving process and the use of natural dyes made from seeds and plants.

We will continue the day with a local cooking workshop led by women from the “Deleite Ancestral” cooperative, who will share their culinary secrets with us. We will learn how to prepare traditional Mayan dishes using local ingredients. At the end of the workshop, we will share a meal in a warm and authentic atmosphere.

This important archaeological site, where centuries-old stones still evoke the splendor of one of the most fascinating civilizations in history, offers a glimpse into Guatemala’s rich cultural heritage.

At this sacred site, we will celebrate the lives of women through a Mayan Ceremony, led by a Mayan spiritual guide, during which each participant will receive her Nahual, a spiritual symbol rooted in Mayan tradition.
