It is the second-largest party in Rio de Janeiro—second only to Carnival: New Year's Eve, known locally as "Réveillon," held along Copacabana Beach, with its main gathering point right in front of the Belmond Copacabana Palace.

There is no admission fee for the beach celebration, and more than 2.5 million tourists and Cariocas gather every year for this legendary event to take part in one of the largest and best parties in the world. Visitors begin arriving at Copacabana Beach early in the day to secure their spot; before midnight, close to 3 million people are on the sand marveling at the fireworks display.

Dozens of restaurants operate right near Copacabana Beach—as well as in neighboring Ipanema and Leblon—offering exclusive fixed-price menus (prix fixe) to celebrate New Year's Eve. The beachfront avenue, Avenida Atlântica, is closed to vehicle traffic throughout the festivities. Options cater to every style, from celebrating directly on the sand to enjoying the view from an oceanfront restaurant terrace or hotel rooftop.

As night falls, live music begins along the beach. Multiple stages are typically set up across the shoreline, featuring a variety of local acts performing famous Brazilian samba, alongside international rock and pop artists setting the mood for the arrival of the new year.

The fireworks naturally begin at midnight, launched from barges anchored off the coast of Copacabana. Lasting around 20 minutes, they deliver a massive spectacle, with organizers aiming to outdo themselves every single year.

What Should I Wear?

To celebrate this occasion, Brazilians always choose white—symbolizing purity and a clean slate for the year ahead.

For parties on the sand, light and comfortable clothing is best: sundresses, shorts, and, of course, the indispensable Havaianas flip-flops.

For upscale gala parties, white combined with gold or silver accents is ideal. For men, white trousers paired with a sharp linen shirt work perfectly.
